Meaning? In the cartoon, the sweating rock climber has finally scaled the mountain to get to the swami sitting on the pinnacle looking out over a vast panorama. The wise man is sitting cross legged with a turban on his head and a peaceful look on his face. The climber can barely wait to ask his burning question. “So, what is the meaning of life?” The little man gazes back with sad eyes and says, “I don’t know. The computer is down!” HA HA What a let down for that enthusiastic seeker! “I don’t know… computer is down.” Who does know? How do they know? Lots of smart and sophisticated people in the world…charismatic, persuasive, powerful people. Does that give them an edge in understanding the meaning of human life? What about the reclusive soul who lives simply and quietly and shuns all the customs and conventions and politics and takes advice from no one? Have they, therefore, found life’s purpose or meaning? Does anyone have the authority to decide or declare for the rest of us? Well, these are hard questions. King Solomon, an ancient wise man, tells us that he observed and experienced everything which could be imagined. And said, “Here is the conclusion of the matter. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the entire duty of mankind” (Ecclesiastes 12:13). That statement made it into the Bible because GOD inspired that very thought. So its truth is not because it was spoken by Solomon but because it is the answer given by God to our question of MEANING and PURPOSE for life!
